Task 2a Recycling

After watching the segments from the "Giving Packaging and New Lift" video, to think that we have so much invested in trying to save as much of the materials that we have already used is a great thing to see. Recycling is not something that has sprouted up in the past week, but is something that has been growing for a long time and today we have the capability to recycle a lot more than we would have thought 20 years ago.

Watching the machinery doing its work it is amazing to see the amount of technology that people have invested to make sure they can get everything out on products to make them new. To also see how little human interference is needed to get the job done is amazing. The issue that I have is to think that there are still many people who don't care, for what we do at home by just choosing which bin we throw our rubbish into it is not a large scale process like what happens at these separating factories. What we do at home can change so much not only to save the environment but also to provide use with materials and products that can be used again after one life or service already.

It doesn't take a lot of effort for us at home to recycle our waste but yet it makes such a difference when we all do it. All people should be aiming to try to recycle everything they waste.

Ecological Footprint Survey

Doing the survey I found there was one issue with it all, some of the questions that were asked could be answered very inaccurately. No one really knows how many km they drive, fly or catch public transport on, and the problem was that the answers really changed the outcome of your ecological foot print. The other issue that I had in answering some of the questions was that i didn't know the size of the property that my house is on, which like the travel question I had to guess.

The other thing that bugged me was when completing the survey I was told that if everyone on earth lived like me we would need 5.08 earths, What does that mean? It really isn't the most descriptive or informative result.

Although it was interesting to know how my footprint stacked up to the average of Australia I really didn't find the survey helpful in makeing any changes to my lifestyle. It did make me think a little that how we live in Australia can affect the world and that by our lifestyle we would need many more worlds that what we have to sustain our lifestyles. It was a little bit of a wake up call to see that to make things better we really need to reduce our damage from the way we live
