TASK 2d ETHICAL DESIGN ISSUES - Objectified

Objectified addresses so many ideas about design that it is hard to focus on one thing, it really was such an interesting experience to listen to the ideas and thoughts on design of some of the worlds most famous designers. They all shared so many views and ideas but all of them slightly different showing that the ways in which they designed were all different, it showed us how they thought about the world and their experiences and how these effected the way that they addressed their designs.
I did see a trend in what they were saying about the end of life for a product and how this has become very important in the way that their designs have changed over the years, when many of them entered the design field they commented that they didn't even think about the end of a product. But now many of them are wanting to design in a way that people use them for years to come and how with use the product becomes better, for example one designer talked about a leather briefcase that they inherited from their father and although its old it gets better as time goes on and it is used more, or the first laptop which was made of magnesium and was finished in black, but over time when it has become scratched and damaged the designer said he liked the way that it was given character when you could see the magnesium coming through the black.
Designers seem to want customers to use products for much longer than they would think of using things now, marc newson commented that in many cases its just about wanting something new when the current product that they are using now was still able to be used. There is a real need for consumers to hold onto products for a much longer period of time, because, as designers have realised, we cannot keep just buying new things for no reason and throwing away things that are still working. Designs seem to need to be more timeless and interesting that customers would want to hold on because they get better over time, whether they are scratched and thus are given character or they work better the more you use it.
I really enjoyed watching this video as i felt that we were really allowed into the way that designers think, an experience that you would not really have the chance to have.
